DRUM MASTERY 2019 – The Shure Drum Contest

It's time for drummers to get the glory they deserve.

Tucked away behind their kits, they don’t always share the limelight with the rest of the band. But playing the drums has always been about more than simply keeping the beat. It’s an attitude. A commitment. A way of life.

Shure wants to recognize the rhythm heroes and talented percussionists out there, so we've called on musicians from 44 countries* around the globe to enter DRUM MASTERY 2019 – The Shure Drum Contest

This competition aims to shine a spotlight on creative drumming by musicians committed to their craft. Do they have a unique playing style? Or are they simply amazing performers? We want to show the world what it means to be a master of the drums. So we asked contestants to submit a video of them playing solo and demonstrating their skills without any musical accompaniment.

See official rules for complete details.

Over 1,000 musicians from around the world took up the challenge in search of drumming glory. But there can be only one grand prize winner: Daniel Kelly II from Hampton, Virginia.

Kelly won over the all-star drummer jury with his video entry incorporating various rhythmic styles and a creative approach to playing. He will receive a five-day, all-expense paid trip to London, where he will take part in a masterclass with Ash Soan and a drum-miking workshop with a pro studio engineer at Metropolis Studios. His prize also includes $5,000 worth of Shure gear!

Second place goes to Matthias Knorr from Germany and Carlos Arturo Hernández Cubillos from Colombia placed third. They will receive $3,000 and $1,000 in Shure equipment respectively.

“The talent from around the world that I’ve seen during the Shure Drum Mastery competition has been fantastic,” said Soan. “It’s been an honor to be involved with Shure and all the drummers.”

Prior to the finals, Shure selected 38 Country Winners from all entries receiving at least 50 votes online by May 6, 2019. An all-star jury made up of pro drummers from around the world – Ash Soan (UK), Taylor Gordon (US), Tobias Derer (GER), Takashi Kashikura (JPN), Shiguang Cui (CHN) – then selected the top three finishers from these national champions. All Country Winners will receive a prize package consisting of a Shure MV88+ Video Kit and Shure SE215 Sound Isolating™ Bluetooth Earphones.
